IGLOO CONSTRUCTION II.

Life without beauty.

I see a meaning in letting nature deal with the man-made, therefore I let the plywood sculpture retain the raw, natural and unprotected surface. Just like the Japanese tea house architects, I see the decay as a symbol of the transmutation of things.

The sculpture is a further development of my earlier work Igloo Construction I, where I continue to create on the basis of igloo symbolic significance revolving around questions on original symbols, civilizations, materiality, environment and physical space. I use the igloo to question the speculative aspect of our beliefs about another place and for its almost metaphysical properties.

By bringing a building out of its context I let it stand out and become visible from the background.

The sculpture will work as shelter and set design for the workshop Bygg Rec and Record Construct, please visit www.local-a.org

IGLOO CONSTRUCTION I illustrates a process where thoughts on environmental issues, temporality, construction methods and choice of material are central. The shape of an igloo represents a place and notions on a specific culture.

The construction that is built out of peat with traditional techniques is a self-supporting structure like a conventional igloo. The function of the structure is removed to mark the symbolic value before the functional.

Images are from the exhibition at Gallei Mejan during my master exhibition. The project was also exhibited in Bildmuseet in UmeƄ at Art Camp 2008.
